Patekar’s father, Gajanan Patekar was a textile businessman, and his mother’s name is Nirmala Patekar was a homemaker. Along with Nana Patekar, his father has 7 children, 5 of them passed away and 2 of his brothers’ names are Ashok and Dilip Patekar. In 1978, Nana Patekar got married to Neelkanti Patekar, a former bank officer, actress, and producer. Later, he got separated from his wife Neelkanti and then, came into a relationship with the actress Manisha Koirala. Life Journey

Nana Patekar did his schooling at Samarth Vidyalaya, Dadar West, Mumbai. Thereafter, he went to Bandra School of Arts (now L.S. Raheja School of Art) in Mumbai. Nana completed a Commercial Arts Diploma from Sir J.J. Institute of Applied Art, Mumbai. Patekar also did some odd jobs like painting Zebra crossings, painting movie posters to earn money.

Since the age of 5, he started acting and worked for a long on the Marathi stage, acting in various award-winning plays including Hamidabaichi Kothi and Purush before moving to Marathi films and television and then making his foray into Bollywood. Nana Patekar started his career as a commercial artist and visualizer at Strusa Advertising. He later quit his job to do theatres. In 1978, He made his acting debut with the Bollywood film “Gaman”.

Nana Patekar also has a farmhouse in Pune. He owns a Royal Enfield Classic 350 motorcycle, which costs Rs 1.4 lakh. He also owns a Mahindra Scorpio priced at Rs 9.3 lakh and the only luxury car is the Audi Q7 priced at Rs 81 lakh.

Controversies

  • In 2008, during the shooting of the movie “Horn O.K. Please,” Bollywood actress Tanushree Dutta leveled allegations of ‘indecent behavior’ against Nana Patekar. After 10 years, she re-erupted the incident during the MeToo campaign and filed an FIR against “Nana Patekar” on 6 October 2018.
  • In 2014, he slammed the extension of parole to the jailed actor Sanjay Dutt and vowed to never work with the convicted star.
  • In 2016, he supported the ban of Pakistani artists in Bollywood and said, “Pakistan, artistes come later. My nation comes first. I don’t know anyone except my country and don’t want to know anything else. Artistes are small insects in front of the nation, we are worth nothing compared to the country. I don’t want to know what Bollywood says. I was in the army for two years. Our jawans are the real heroes. We are ordinary, useless people. Do not pay attention to what we say. Do you understand whom am I talking about? Humalog jo patar patar karte hain, unpe dhyan mat do. Unki aukat nahi utni.”

Career

Nana Patekar did the role of Nathuram Godse in the British television series Lord Mountbatten: The Last Viceroy. He also did some notable roles in Aaj Ki Awaz (1984), Ankush (1986), Mohre (1987), Pratighaat (1987),  Trishagni (1988). In 1988, His performance in Mira Nair’s Salaam Bombay was praised. Nana got huge fame in mainstream Hindi Cinema for his portrayal of a crime lord in Parinda (1989) for which he won his first National Film Award for Best Supporting Actor and also awarded the Filmfare Best Supporting Actor Award.

In 1991, Nana Patekar turned director with his movie Prahaar co-starring Madhuri Dixit for which he underwent training for his role as an Indian Army officer and was awarded honorary Captain’s rank in Territorial Army. In 1992, His role in Angaar earned him the Filmfare Best Villain Award. Later in 1993, He co-starred with industry veteran Raaj Kumar in Tirangaa.

Nana Patekar played a truant, gambling son in Krantiveer in 1994, for which he won the National Film Award for Best Actor and also won the Filmfare Award and the Star Screen Awards. Patekar also played the character of a ghost in the children’s film Abhay in 1994. Then Patekar co-starred with great Rishi Kapoor in Hum Dono in 1995. He played a wife beater in Agni Sakshi (1996), a deaf father to Manisha Koirala in Khamoshi (1996), a gangster in Ghulam-E-Mustafa (1997), an honest but maverick cop in Yeshwant (1997), and a schizophrenic in Wajood (1998).

In 1999, Patekar apeared with Amitabh Bachchan in Kohram, where he played an undercover Indian Army intelligence officer chasing Bachchan’s incognito. His other notable films of this decade were Yugpurush and Hu Tu Tu.

In between Patekar did many movies but he got huge fame after playing a comic role in the ‘Welcome’ movie in 2007, he played the role of a powerful crime lord in Dubai. He was seen in Ram Gopal Verma’s The Attacks of 26/11 in the year 2013 which was based on the events of 2008 Mumbai Attacks in which he played the role of Joint Commissioner of Police, Rakesh Maria.
