Life Journey

Raj Babbar completed his schooling from Faiz-e-Aam Inter College in Agra and graduated from Agra College in Uttar Pradesh. He trained in method acting at the National School of Drama and graduated in Theatre.

After training in method acting, Raj Babbar moved to Mumbai. He made his cinematic debut with the comedy film titled “Kissa Kursi Ka” in the year 1977. He was cast opposite Shabana Azmi in this film. Unfortunately for him, the movie was not passed by the censor board and all the blueprints of the film were also burnt because it showed politicians in the wrong way. Three years later, he worked in the film ‘Sau Din Saas Ke’ starring opposite acclaimed actress of that time, Reena Roy.

Career

Raj Babbar attained public recognition through a very well played role of a rich playboy-rapist in B.R. Chopra’s Insaaf Ka Tarazu, which starred the highly acclaimed female star Zeenat Aman and was the debut film of the 13-year-old Padmini Kolhapure. There was a major controversy over the propriety of showing the horrific rape of a 13-year old on screen, which was considered by most to be titillating and exploitative – and perhaps because of that, the movie was very successful commercially.

He became a consistent actor in B.R. Chopra’s films. He starred in Nikaah with Deepak Parashar and Salma Agha and in Aaj Ki Aawaz with Smita Patil with whom he had an intense affair and subsequently married, despite being married with two children at the time.

He worked with top banners and top stars of his era, and despite a few off-beat hits, never really achieved star-status. As he has aged, he has started doing more character roles, playing the villain with great elan and menace – a throwback to his start as the best-loved rapist of 1985 in Insaaf Ka Taraazu.
