Latrell Sprewell Early Life

Latrell Fontaine Sprewell was born on September 8, 1970, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Latoska Field and Pamela Sprewell were his parents. Sprewell and his family moved away from Milwaukee early in his childhood, settling in Flint, Michigan.

Sprewell moved back to Milwaukee to live with his mother after his parents divorced during his sophomore year. Sprewell didn’t start taking basketball seriously until his senior year. Sprewell made the team despite having no prior experience with organised sports and ended up averaging 28 points per game that season.

Latrell Sprewell Career

  • Latrell Sprewell got off to a tremendous start in his career. In the 1990s, the All-Star led the Golden State Warriors to a historic postseason berth with rookie Chris Webber. Webber notably forced a trade after the season.
  • This quick descent into mediocrity (the Warriors didn’t make the playoffs again until 2007) set the tone for the rest of Sprewell’s turbulent career. The good times never lasted as long as they could have.
  • His ability was evident, but his haste ended his NBA career far sooner than expected. After choking P.J. Carlesimo during a practise altercation, Sprewell’s contract was revoked. The NBA punished him for a year, and he swiftly rose to become one of America’s most reviled athletes.
  • He was able to resurrect his career with the Knicks. He was fined $250,000, though, for failing to disclose a fractured hand when he reported to training camp. After five seasons in New York, Sprewell was traded to the Minnesota Timberwolves in 2002-03.
  • In February 1999, Sprewell played 37 games for the Knicks, scoring 26.0 points per game and earning a five-year, $62 million contract. For the Minnesota Timberwolves, Sprewell, Kevin Garnett, and point guard Sam Cassell became the league’s highest-scoring trio.
  • Sprewell, on the other hand, turned down a three-year, $21 million contract extension from the Timberwolves on October 31, 2004. His refusal to accept the deal effectively ended his career, with the federal marshals foreclosing on his assets, including his two homes and reclaiming his yacht.
  • He claimed that $21 million would not be enough to feed his family. Sprewell earned over $97 million during his NBA career, according to ESPN, but much of that money was clearly gone by February 2008, when Citizens Bank filed a foreclosure suit on the $405,000 property he acquired in Milwaukee in 1994.
  • His two homes were allegedly foreclosed on shortly after, and he was denied access to his children. Sprewell’s estimated net worth is in the $50,000 area.

Latrell Sprewell Personal Life

Sprewell has been in a number of relationships in the past, but they all failed miserably. He married Candice Cabbil at the University of Alabama in 1989, and the couple has four children.
