Jaya Prada is a well-known Indian film actress and politician. Jaya is recognized to be one of the great actresses in Hindi cinema and was one of the most iconic and prominent actresses in both Hindi and South film industry in the late ’70s, 80’s and early ’90s. She is the receiver of 3 Filmfare Awards South and has starred in several Telugu, Malayalam, Hindi, Kannada Tamil, Bengali, and Marathi movies.

Jaya Prada was born in a Hindu family on 3 April 1962 in Rajahmundry, Andhra Pradesh, India. Her father, Krishna Rao, was a Telugu film financier, and her mother, Neelaveni, was a homemaker. She has no siblings. Jaya married a film producer, Shrikant Nahata in 1986. At that time, Shrikant was already married and had three children one of them is Siddhu.

Life Journey

Jaya Prada attended a Telugu medium school in her hometown, Rajahmundry, and joined in dance and music classes. When she was only 13 years old, she performed a dance at her school’s annual function. A film director in the audience proposed to her a dance role for 3 minutes in the Telugu movie Bhoomi Kosam and she took it.

The rushes of those 3 minutes of the film were shown to the main figures of the Telugu film industry, and the gates opened. Big-name directors requested her with leading roles in big films and she accepted them. Jaya became a big star in 1976 with huge hits. K. Balachander’s Anthuleni Katha showcased her exciting skills, K. Viswanath’s Siri Siri Muvva showed her playing a mute with great dancing skills, and her lead role as Sita in the big-budget whimsical movie Seetha Kalyanam proved her versatility.

Career

Jaya starred in Adavi Ramudu in 1977, which burst box office records and permanently bonded her star status. K. Viswanath remade Siri Siri Muvva into the Hindi film Sargam and introduced her to Bollywood in 1979. The movie became a huge hit and Jaya became an overnight star there as well. She earned her first Filmfare nomination as Best Actress, but couldn’t capitalize on her success, as she couldn’t speak Hindi.

It took 3 more years before director K. Vishwanath relaunched Jaya again in Hindi movies, with the hit movie Kaamchor in 1982, where she spoke Hindi fluently for the first time. She was then able to consistently work in Hindi movies and earn 2 more Filmfare nominations as Best Actress for playing Amitabh Bachchan’s endearing girlfriend in Prakash Mehra’s Sharaabi in 1984 and for her challenging double role in K. Vishwanath’s Sanjog in 1985.

Along with her Bollywood film career, Jaya resumed starring in acclaimed movies in the South including Sagara Sangamam in 1983. She gained an audience, not just with the pieces, but also with the great Indian director Satyajit Ray, who has said she was one of the loveliest women in the world.

Prada made a successful pair, not just with Jeetendra and Amitabh Bachchan, but also with her next screen rival Sridevi, with whom she has worked in about a dozen movies. Their hit Telugu film Devata, where they performed as sisters who made big sacrifices for each other, was remade into the hit Hindi movie Tohfaa in 1984.

In 2002, Jaya moved into the Marathi film industry by being a guest in the movie Aadhaar. Jaya has performed in 7 languages and has completed 300 movies during a 30-year acting career. Jaya started playing grown-up roles in 2004.

Jaya joined politics by joining the Telugu Desam Party. Jaya Prada was nominated to be an MP in Rajyasabha by the TDP party. Following disputes with party Supremo N. Chandrababu Naidu, she dropped TDP to join the Samajwadi Party and contested from Rampur parliamentary Constituency in UP during the last General election in 2004.
