About Puneet Issar

Puneet Issar is a well-known Indian actor and director. He is best known for playing the role of Duryodhana in the TV series Mahabharat, and directing Garv: Pride and Honour starring Salman Khan. His other notable roles are in Border, and as the second lead in the cult Indian horror film Purana Mandir.

Puneet Issar was born in a Brahmin family on 6 November 1959 in Amritsar, Punjab. He is the son of the film director, Sudesh Issar. Not much is known about his mother. Puneet is married to Deepali, daughter of Punjabi actor, Diljit Puri and Bengali singer, Ashita Puri. The couple is blessed with a son, Siddhant Issar, and a daughter, Nivriti Issar.

Controversies During the shoot of one of the fight scenes of the movie coolie, Amitabh Bachchan was hurt badly. Puneet was really criticized by the whole country and became a real-life villain for everyone as Amitabh was seriously injured and had to go through surgery. But after recovering from the injury, Amitabh Bachchan cleared the matter by saying Puneet had done nothing intentionally

Life Journey

Puneet Issar completed his schooling at Mumbai’s St. Lawrence High School. He went to Mithibai College to pursue his graduation. After completing his graduation, Issar did a course in acting from Pune’s Film and Television Institute of India.

Puneet began his career as an acting professor in the Film and Television Institute of India, Pune. After struggling in the industry for a long time, he bagged the role of ‘Bob’ in the Bollywood film Coolie in 1983. Though, during the shooting of the movie, Puneet accidentally injured Amitabh Bachchan. After the incident, no one was ready to work with him. Issar, then, struggled for 6 years and did small roles in some B-grade movies.

Career

Then, Puneet Issar portrayed the role of Duryodhana in the epic TV series Mahabharat from 1988 to 1990, directed by B. R. Chopra and Ravi Chopra. It was this performance that gained him mainstream fame. Issar along with other actors of the epic TV show often toured the whole of India and even abroad to perform live shows based on the epic throughout the ’90s.

Puneet Issar portrayed the role of the Indian Superman, a Bollywood version of the Hollywood films. Later he did several other horror films such as Tehkhana in the 1980s. Issar also acted in films including Partner, Krrish, Aryan, Bachna Ae Haseeno, and many more in the 2000s.

Puneet has also directed TV serials including Hindustani and Jai Mata Ki starring Hema Malini. He has acted in over 12 TV serials such as Sahil, Junoon, Noor Jahan, Vikram Aur Betaal, and many more. Puneet has appeared in over 1800 episodes on Indian television. He portrayed the role of King Bimbisara in the feature film Gautama Buddha – The Life and Times of Gautama Buddha.

Puneet also acted in the Left-Right Left of the Indian Channel Sab TV. He has also performed in a number of Punjabi movies including Rab Ne Banayian Jodiyan and in a few Telugu movies. In 1997, Issar has also given a brilliant display of his acting skills in the mythological movie Suryaputra Shanidev.

He directed the movie Garv: Pride and Honour starring Salman Khan and Shilpa Shetty in lead roles in 2004. His one more directorial venture in 2011 was I Am Singh, the story of which is also written by him. The film did average critically and commercially.

In the year 2013, Paras Lubricants Ltd signed him as the Brand Ambassador for their range of Automotive Oils and Lubricants. He also played the role of Parashurama in the recent TV series Mahabharat. Issar then went on to play the role of Daar Ji in Bani Ishq Da Kalma. In 2008, Issar participated in the Indian controversial TV reality show Big Boss Season 8. Puneet made it to the grand finale and was one of the seven finalists.
