Zhao made her TV debut and appeared on TV for the first time in 1994, in the movie A Soul Haunted by Painting. This was her first acting experience and appeared at the beginning of the film and had no dialogue.
She next appeared in the movie Penitentiary Angel (1996). Later in the same year, Zhao was cast in various TV series mainly Sisters in Beijing (1996) which was her first series with leading role.
Her real success came in 1997 when she was cast in the TV series My Fair Princess.
She has also worked in numerous Hong Kong films and the first film was a comedy film titled Shaolin Soccer in 2001.
Zhao has also won a number of various awards for her acting including the Best Actress Award at Golden Eagle Award, 30th Hundred Flowers Awards, 10th Changchun Film Festival, and 19th Shanghai Film Critics Awards.
