Urmila Matondkar is a well-known Indian actress and politician. She is a prominent film actress whose career traversed over 3 decades in the Hindi film industry with infrequent stints in Marathi, Tamil, Telugu, and Malayalam language films. Matondkar forayed into the cinematic realm in 1980 and was one of the most revered actresses of our generation. She was conferred numerous accolades and awards for her films.

Urmila Matondkar was born in a Marathi Hindu Family on 4 February 1974 in Mumbai. Her father’s name is Shivinder Singh, a lecturer and her mother’s name is Rukshana Sultana, a homemaker. She has an elder sister Mamta Matondkar, a former actress, and a younger sister named Pooja Matondkar. Urmila also has an elder brother Kedar Matondkar, who has worked in the Indian Air Force as an Aircraft Maintenance Technician.  Urmila was rumored to be dating the Bollywood director, Ram Gopal Varma. She dated Mohsin Akhtar Mir, a model, and businessman for a while before marrying him on 3 March 2016.

    Urmila Matondkar did her schooling in Mumbai and went to Pune University to pursue her graduation in arts (philosophy). She was a studious child. At the age of 6, she started working in films as a child actress. She made her debut as a child artist with Shyam Benegal’s Kalyug (1980) and followed it by featuring in movies like Masoom (1983), Bhavna (1984), Sur Sangam (1985), and Bade Ghar Ki Beti (1989).

    Urmila started her career as an adult actress in 1989 with the Malayalam film “Chanakya” opposite Kamal Hassan. The film was a blockbuster, and her acting was praised by the audience. Her Bollywood debut came in 1991 with the action drama “Narsimha” in which she played the role of Meenu S. Singh, the rebellious daughter of Om Puri.

    After a brief setback, Urmila Matondkar landed herself as a leading actress of Bollywood with the romantic drama Rangeela (1995), following which she gained further success with the drama Judaai (1997), the crime movie Satya (1998), the romantic comedy film Khoobsurat (1999), and the thriller movie Jungle (2000). Urmila also gained success in Telugu and Tamil cinema with starring performances in Antham (1992), Gaayam (1993), Indian (1996), and Anaganaga Oka Roju (1997).

    Urmila Matondkar garnered significant recognition for playing a range of intense characters in numerous psychological thrillers and horror movies, including a serial killer in Kaun (1999), an obsessive lover in Pyaar Tune Kya Kiya (2001), a possessed woman in Bhoot (2003), and a violent avenger in Ek Hasina Thi (2004).

    During these years, Matondkar colluded with independent filmmakers in the art-house, including the dramas Tehzeeb (2003), Pinjar (2003), Maine Gandhi Ko Nahin Mara (2005), Bas Ek Pal (2006), and the Marathi film Ajoba (2014).

    In accession to acting in films, Urmila is connected with various humanitarian causes and is vocal about issues faced by women and children. Matondkar has engaged in concert tours and stage shows and featured as a talent judge for several dance reality shows, including Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa.

    Urmila Matondkar entered the Indian National Congress on 27 March 2019. She fought from Mumbai North constituency in the 2019 Lok Sabha Election but lost. On 10 September 2019, Matondkar resigned from the party, citing petty internal politics.
