He joined Varroc Vengsarkar Cricket Academy placed in Pimpri Chinchwad in Pune when he was 13 years old. He made his first-class debut for Maharashtra on 6 October 2016 in the Ranji Trophu. He played his first twenty20 game for Maharashtra in  Inter State Twenty-20 Tournament in 2017. He played as an opener for Maharashtra Cricket team against Chattisgarh in the Ranji Trophy season 2019 and scored 108 in first inning and 76 in second inning and also won the award for man of the match. On 25 February 2017, he debuted for Maharashtra in List A in the 2016-17 Vijay Hazare Trophy. He also played domestic cricket for India A, India B, India Blue, Maharashtra and the India Under 23 team. The Indian B team named Gaikwad to its squad for the upcoming Deodhar Trophy in October 2018. He was selected in the Indian team for the 2018 Asia Cup for Emerging Teams of the ACC. His name was included in India B’s team for the Deodhar Trophy season 2019–20. In July 2021 he got the opportunity and made his debut in international cricket against Sri Lanka in T20 and ODI series.

IPL Career

In the player auction for the 2019 Indian Premier League, Gaikwad was bought by the Chennai Super Kings. As part of the 2021 tournament, Gaikwad made his maiden century in the IPL, scoring 101 not out against the Rajasthan Royals. Gaikwad innings of 32 runs off 27 balls led CSK to a 27-run victory over Kolkata Knight Riders in the finals on 15 October.
