Manisha Koirala is a well-known Indian actress, producer, and social activist. She is also known by the nicknames like Manu and Manya. She is famous for her playing the role of Priya Verma in the film Mann. Despite her deadly disease of cancer, she worked regularly to please her fans and worked dedicatedly for the well-being of society.

Manisha Koirala was born on 16 August 1970 in Kathmandu, Nepal. Her father’s name is Prakash Koirala, who has served as the cabinet minister of Nepal for Environment, Science, and Technology, while her mother’s name is Sushma Koirala, a homemaker. Her grandfather Bishweshwar Prasad Koirala was the Prime Minister of Nepal from 1959 to 1960. She has one brother Siddharth Koirala, who is also in the field of acting.

Manisha had affair with the Bollywood Actor Vivek Mushran, Music Director Sandeep Chowta, Australian Ambassador for Nepal Crispin Conroy, actor Nana Patekar, Nigerian Businessman Cecil Anthony, DJ Whosane, model and actor Aryan Vaid, actor Akshay, Restaurateur Prashant Chaudhari, and sports counselor Christopher Dorris. She formed a close affection with Samrat Dahal, a Nepali businessman, after meeting through the online social networking website. On 19 June 2010, Manisha married him. But their marriage did not last as long as they separated in 2012.

Life Journey

Manisha Koirala studied at Army Public School, Dhaula Kuan, New Delhi, and Vasant Kanya Mahavidhyalaya (VKM), Varanasi. She lived with her grandmother in Varanasi during her schooling days. Her dream was to become a doctor, but a modeling stint opened a career path into Bollywood. Once she collaborated with her brother Siddharth Koirala in the film Anwar.

In 2004, Manisha returned from New York after getting a diploma in filmmaking. She became a member of an independent documentary filmmaker’s society. Manisha’s first movie was Pheri Bhetaula (We shall meet again), a Nepali movie released in early 1989. In 1991, She appeared in her first Hindi movie was Subhash Ghai’s Saudagar. The movie proved to be a great beginning, as it was the greatest hit of the year.

Career

Manisha Koirala starred in a number of unsuccessful movies until Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s romantic venture 1942: A Love Story in 1994 and Mani Ratnam’s Tamil drama Bombay in 1995 came out. Her performance in the latter was particularly appreciated and received the Filmfare Critics Award for Best Performance.

Manisha was also seen in more commercial movies, including Akele Hum Akele Tum in 1995 opposite Aamir Khan.  Koirala had a particularly great year in 1996. Manisha earned positive reviews for her performance in the drama Agni Sakshi, where she portrayed the role of a battered wife on the run from her mentally sick husband, played by Nana Patekar.

In the same year, Manisha acted in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s directorial debut, Khamoshi: The Musical. In the next year, Koirala played the leading role alongside Kajol and Bobby Deol in the thriller Gupt: The Hidden Truth. The movie became one of the biggest hits of the year.

Koirala went to collaborate once again with Mani Ratnam and starred in his award-winning film Dil Se in 1998 opposite SRK. Her role got similarly good reviews and earned her numerous award nominations. Despite performing poorly at the box office in India, the movie proved to be a hit overseas. Later, Koirala starred opposite Ajay Devgan in Ram Gopal Verma’s Company in 2002. The movie was a critical success, as was her performance in it, and she got her third Filmfare Best Performer Award.”

In 2003, she left the mainstream cinema. Manisha was seen in numerous low-budget movies, yet not less challenging roles. Manisha ventured into strong woman-oriented movies in 2003 including Escape From Taliban which got her the BFJA Best Actress Award. She then played the main lead in the movie Market where she performed the role of a prostitute, portraying a whole life story.

Her only release of 2007 was Anwar, in which she portrayed a supporting role. In the next year, Manisha made her comeback to movies, with her first leading role since Mumbai Express, in Tulsi, opposite Irrfan Khan.
