Gabriel Barbosa Almeida, commonly known as Gabigol or Gabi, is a Brazilian professional footballer who plays forward for Flamengo of the Campeonato Brasileiro Série A as well as the Brazil national team. While growing up in Montanhao, young Gabriel had a football-loving childhood that was nearly marred by violence.

When the unrest was intense, the frantic rhythm of close-range gunfire would send the then little boy and his parents scrambling for cover under tables and sofas. Gabriel took to the streets when he wasn’t under a table or sofa to play football like most kids his age. Gabriel began training in the indoor football sport called futsal with the loving support of his family.

He didn’t have to wait long to play competitive futsal for Sao Paulo’s junior side once he was 8 years old. Gabriel exhibited stellar skills against Santos during an auspicious matchday. Zito was delighted.

Club Career

Gabriel joined Santos FC’s youth setup in 2004 when he was 8 years old. His prolific goalscoring earned him the nickname Gabigol throughout the club’s youth ranks.
