Life Journey

Gabriel Barbosa Almeida was born in Sao Bernardo do Campo, on the outskirts of Sao Paulo, on August 30, 1996. His mother, Lindalva Barbosa, and father, Valdemir Barbosa, have two children. A photo of Gabriel Barbosa’s parents at the time of their marriage.

The talented Brazilian footballer with Portuguese family roots grew up in the neighborhood of Montanh5o, in his birth municipality, along with his younger sister, Dhiovanna Barbosa.

While growing up in Montanhao, young Gabriel had a football-loving childhood that was nearly marred by violence.

When the unrest was intense, the frantic rhythm of close-range gunfire would send the then little boy and his parents scrambling for cover under tables and sofas. Gabriel took to the streets when he wasn’t under a table or sofa to play football like most kids his age. Gabriel began training in the indoor football sport called futsal with the loving support of his family.

He didn’t have to wait long to play competitive futsal for Sao Paulo’s junior side once he was 8 years old. Gabriel exhibited stellar skills against Santos during an auspicious matchday. Zito was delighted.

Gabriel was thus invited to join the youth teams of Santo FC where he spent the better part of his early career playing alongside his close friend Neymar Jr. As Gabriel rose through Santos’ youth ranks, he showed great promise. Gabriel had scored no less than 600 goals during his eight-year tenure with the club. Gabriel earned the nickname “Gabigol” as a result of his prolific play, as well as a spot in Brazil’s junior team.

Gabriel was invited to train with Santos’ senior team by the club’s then-coach, Muricy Ramalho, after much fanfare. Saints FC signed Gabriel to a long-term deal worth €50million and was happy to watch him maintain his form after making his debut at the age of 16.
