ATM Shamsuzzaman was born on September 10, 1941, in Noakhali, British India to Nooruzzaman and Noorunnesa. His father was a prominent lawyer associated with A. K. Fazlul Huq regarding politics. He studied at Collegiate School in Dhaka. Shamsuzzaman passed matriculation from Mymensingh City High School. Then he admitted into Jagannath University.
