Ali Fazal is a well-known Indian model, television personality, and actor. He made his screen debut with a short role in the English language movie The Other End of the Line. Though this versatile actor has not done several movies, his work has marked his position in Bollywood already. He is best known for his Bollywood debut character, ‘Joy’ in the film, 3 Idiots.

All Fazal was born into a Muslim middle-class family on 15 October 1986 in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, India. His father’s name is Mohammad Rafique and his mother’s name is Uzma. Ali’s parents got separated when he was 18 years old. Ali has been dating actress Richa Chadha since 2016.

Controversies In 2015, Ali Fazal sparked a controversy by saying that his co-star in Khamoshiyan, Gurmeet Choudhary, was merely used by the makers to promote the film because he only had a good fan following and nothing more. He further added that Gurmeet’s “Lord Ram” character in NDTV Imagine’s Ramayana was the only character responsible for his “fan following.”

Ali Fazal completed his schooling at, The Doon School, Dehra Dun, and also attended La Martiniere College in Lucknow and He was a basketball player during his school time, and he always wished to represent India at the International level. After completed his schooling, his parents aspired Ali to pursue Engineering, but he anyhow influenced his parents and ended his graduation in economics from St. Xavier’s College.

Ali had an acting bug in him since his school days as he used to participate in school plays. Fazal was chosen to play the character of Trinculo in Shakespeare’s play, The Tempest. Before getting into the cinema, All did many commercial ads including Pizza Hut, Union Bank of India, LG, Slice, and Micromax Mobile.

In 2008, Fazal debuted through the English language film, The Other End of the Line. Then, Ali appeared in the American television miniseries, Bollywood Hero. In 2009, Ali portrayed a supporting role of Joy Lobo in the film 3 Idiots. After his film, Always Kabhi Kabhi flopped badly at the box-office, Fazal stated in an interview that it was not the right decision to do the movie. He further told that he lost a nearby 15 kgs weight for the movie. His film, Fukrey in 2013 was a breakthrough for him, as his career picked up the pace and he bagged numerous offers for the lead roles.

Career

In 2013, Fazal appeared in the romantic comedy movie Baat Bann Gayi, which was considered a parody of Shakespeare’s The Comedy of Errors. Fazal portrayed the dual character of Kabir, a successful novelist from Singapore, and Rasiya Bihari, a local don. In the year 2014, he appeared in a supporting character alongside Vidya Balan in the comedy-drama Bobby Jasoos.

The same year Fazal performed in the movie Sonali Cable opposite Rhea Chakraborty, where he played the role of Raghu. His acting got mixed reviews from critics. Ali next took the lead character in the psychological horror-thriller Khamoshiyan in 2015.

Ali made his Hollywood film debut with a special character in the action movie Furious 7, the seventh part of the Fast and the Furious movie series. He was next seen in an Indo-American film, For Here Or To Go?

In 2016, He performed in Anand L. Rai’s Happy Bhag Jayegi alongside Abhay Deol and Diana Penty. The movie was a critical and commercial hit at the box office. Ali starred in the British-American film Victoria & Abdul in 2017.

In the next year, Fazal performed in spin-off Happy Phirr Bhag Jayegi and portrayed the role of Guddu Pandit in the web series Mirzapur. In the following year, Fazal was cast in Prassthanam, Milan Talkies, and Netflix film House Arrest. Later, in 2020, he continued his character of Guddu Pandit in Mirzapur season 2. Fazal is also cast in the movie Death on the Nile as Andrew Katchadouriaan, a flick based on Agatha Christie’s novel of the same name.
