Angela Evelyn Bassett was born on August 16, 1958, in New York City, USA, to Daniel Benjamin Bassett and Betty Jane. Her father was an electrician and her mother worked as a nurseās aide.
When she was only 10 months old, her parentsĀ deliveredĀ her to Winston-Salem to live with her fatherās sister Aunt Golden. Her parentsĀ splitĀ soon after, and her mother took her and her younger sister Dānette to St. Petersburg, Florida, to live with her grandparents.
Angela would arrive at the church on Sundays and was part of theĀ minorityĀ choir. She liked listening to popular āMotownāĀ blowĀ on the radio, and her mother would often make her and her sister dance for the songs. Afterward, a lady in their neighborhoodĀ supportedĀ them in forming a dance group.
Her mother, who had slacked off in high school, didnāt want her children to suffer the sameĀ destinyĀ and was extraĀ watchfulĀ that they do well in school. AngelaĀ followedĀ āBoca Ciega High Schoolā where she became aĀ representativeĀ of the āUpward Boundā program.
