Amrita Singh is a well-known Indian actress. Through her movies like Betaab and Mard, she earned fame and became a well known and famous actress in the 1980s. Amrita’s mother was a political associate of late Sanjay Gandhi during the time of National Emergency in 1975-76 and her father was an army officer. Amrita married actor Saif Ali Khan in October 1991. Amrita is the mother of two children, actress Sara Ali Khan born on 12 August 1993, and Ibrahim Ali Khan born in October 2001. In 2004, she divorced Saif Ali Khan.

Life Journey

Amrita Singh completed her primary education at Modem School in New Delhi. She made her Bollywood debut with the film Betaab in 1983, an immensely hit movie in which she was paired with Sunny Deol. This was immediately followed by a series of successful movies including Sunny, Mard (which was the highest hit of that year), Saaheb, Chameli Ki Shaadi, and Naam, Khudgarz in 1987, And Waaris 1988.

Amrita Singh made a strong pair in various movies, not only with Sanjay Dutt, Sunny Deol, and Raj Babbar but also with Amitabh Bachchan and Anil Kapoor, 2 leading actors of the 1980s. As well as portraying leading roles, Singh also played supporting negative roles in movies like Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman in 1992 and Aaina in 1993. Amrita also received the Filmfare Best Supporting Actress Award for the latter. Her comic timings are still cherished. She chose to withdraw into family life and quit acting after her presence in the 1993 movie Rang.

Career

Amrita came back to acting in 2002 with the movie Shaheed, in which she portrayed the mother of Bhagat Singh (portrayed by Bobby Deol). In 2005, Singh joined the TV industry with Ekta Kapoor‘s family drama Kavyanjali, broadcasted on Star Plus. She was seen in a negative role in the show, which soon achieved enormous fame. In the same year, Singh earned acclaim for her appearance in yet another negative character for the movie Kalyug. She played the character of gangster Maya Dolas’ mother, Ratnaprabha Dolas, in the Sanjay Gupta film Shootout at Lokhandwala in 2007. Vivek Oberoi portrayed the character of Maya Dolas. Later on, Singh performed in the anthology movie Dus Kahaniyaan, where she looked in the short story Poornmasi.

Resuming her acting journey, she played in the movieKajraare in 2010, and also performed in Aurangzeb under the Yash Raj Films banner, where she was paired with Jackie Shroff after almost 2 decades. She was seen in the movie 2 States, produced by Dharma Productions, playing the role of co-actor Arjun Kapoor’s mother in 2014. In the year 2016, Singh performed as Tiger Shroff’s mother in the film Flying Jat, and recently in 2017, Singh appeared in the acclaimed drama Hindi Medium. Amrita played the Principal’s character for a glance. Singh was lastly seen in Sujoy Ghosh’s Badla where she played the character of Rani Kaur in 2019.
